Prostatitis and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Prostatitis is a condition that causes your prostate gland to become inflamed. If a bacterial infection is present, then it will become very painful to urinate or ejaculate (releasing semen during an orgasm).

The main function of this small gland is to add fluid to semen. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the opening at the end of the penis. Although there is no particular reason about why or what are the causes, in some instances, an infection in the urinary tract or injury be the cause.

To reduce the risks of developing Prostatitis, here are some pointers to take note of:

  • have good hygiene, keeping the head and around the top of your penis clean, to prevent infection;
  • sitting down for long periods puts pressure on your prostate and can cause inflammation over the long term;
  • making time for yourself to exercise, whether in the gym, swim or brisk walk, reducing anxiety and reducing stress. An inflamed prostate helps in relieving some, if not all, of its symptoms.

Prostatitis usually affects men age the ages of 50 or younger.

Question: Is it normal to have testicular pain after bowel movement? Why or why not?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH):

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is another common condition that affects the prostate.

BPH causes a person to have an enlarged prostate. As the prostate enlarges, it squeezes and blocks the urethra, making it hard to empty the bladder completely.

BPH is usually treated with medications that shrink the prostate and reduce urinary symptoms. Your doctor may prescribe one of these drugs or a combination of them.

If medications are not helping or becoming severe, a less invasive procedure, such as:

  • heat with radio frequency ablation
  • microwave energy
  • high-intensity ultrasound waves
  • electric current vaporization

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) usually occurs in over the ages of 50.
